Where Things Touch: A Meditation on Beauty

In awe of the subtle placement of items on this list — they lift off and set the mind to roaming and circling back to the ongoing meditation on beauty.

… many kinds of caress, a foothold, a freefall …

Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Queer Futurity

The present must be known in relation to the alternative temporal and spatial maps provided by a perception of past and future affective worlds.

Why no why?

From a novella about travel and destiny.

I shut my eyes and prayed to the Seven. I wanted to ask, “Why did you let this happen?” but that was blasphemy. You never ask why. It was not a question for you to ask.

The injunction makes perfect sense in the circumstance: needing to concentrate on survival. But at the level of story generation it’s crucial (after discovering what is really happening): when will you become a person who can ask why?

Act and Target

McKenzie Wark “Battle (on Rez)” Gamer Theory Paragraph [127]

The brightly colored shapes that flare at you may look vaguely menacing or brightly friendly. The whole thing is meant to simulate the experience of a nightclub more than a war. This, together with the curious trigger action, highlights the act of targeting rather than the target itself. There is some vaguely sci-fi storyline about why one targets and shoots, but is rather minimal and sketchy. It’s not clear at first just what role the story plays.

Being lost is not losing.

That Spot in the Venn Diagram

Sometimes a single circle is a place with power. Makes me think that Venn diagrams do not take into account the fishbowl effect i.e. there are people watching. You may be in a circle of one but observed by others who are connected to others. The set is not the network.

Play of Light and Silence

Julian Wolfreys
Deconstruction · Derrida

Enlightenment allows us to see where we are, but not where we may be going; illumination reveals to us that we are in the dark.

The parallelism becomes silent: even with illumination we may not know.

Ago you were

Jennifer LoveGrove
The Tinder Sonnets

These are little machines for transposition and mutation. For example: “You were last online twelve minutes ago” shifts its place in next iteration and then in the third : “You were last online twelve mirrors / ago.”

And more magic… from the same sonnet sequence:

“Last online two minutes ago.”

“You were / last online two manifestoes ago.”

The line breaks shape the displacements: you were ago.

Towards Radical Analysis

Catherine Belsey

social formation vs society — as terms page 5

Ideology, in Althusser’s use of the term, works in conjunction with political practice and economic practice to constitute the social formation, a formulation which promotes a more complex and radical analysis of social relations that the familiar term ‘society’, which often evokes either a single homogenous mass, or alternatively a loosely connected group of autonomous individuals, and thus offers no challenge to the assumptions of common sense.
